Getting Here
Getting to the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney is a breeze, even if you're new to the city. Arriving at Sydney Airport, you can hop on the Airport Link train from either the Domestic or International terminals, alighting at Circular Quay or Wynyard Stations. The hotel sits conveniently between these stations. While both are within walking distance, Wynyard Station offers a slightly easier route for those concerned about lugging luggage, as it's on flatter terrain compared to Circular Quay, which involves an uphill walk.
Checking-In
My check-in experience at the hotel was among the finest I've encountered in a long time. Arriving early, having spent the previous night at a nearby hotel, I wanted to drop off my luggage before heading out to Bondi Beach. To my pleasant surprise, the hotel not only stored my luggage but also efficiently completed the check-in process, even though my room wasn't ready yet. Once my room was prepared, I received a text message notifying me that it was ready for occupancy, and my luggage had already been delivered to my room. All I had to do was pick up the room key from reception.
The Room: Executive Grand Harbour View
The Executive Grand Harbour View rooms at the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney offer spaciousness, featuring a king-size bed, a sitting area, and a functional work station. Access to a wide array of TV channels and a generously sized bathroom with a corner shower and an oversized bathtub guarantee a truly luxurious stay.
Of course, the highlight of a harbor view room is the view itself, and it doesn't disappoint. Uninterrupted vistas of Sydney's iconic landmarks make it easy to be captivated as you gaze out of the window. The Sydney Harbour Bridge takes center stage, affording you a front-row seat and stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay below.
The room's view becomes even more magical during May and June when the annual Vivid Festival illuminates Sydney's famous landmarks every night at 6:00 pm. You can sit on your window ledge and enjoy a front-row spectacle of the Opera House projections coming to life.
Hotel Facilities
The Shangri-La Hotel Sydney offers an array of amenities, including a well-equipped gym, a spacious indoor swimming pool, and a rejuvenating spa. For those seeking an extra touch of luxury, the on-site Health Spa is a must-visit.
Even if you're not in a harbour view room, you can still ascend to the 36th floor to dine at the award-winning Altitude Restaurant, which offers breathtaking views. Alternatively, you can enjoy a drink at the Blue Bar on the 36th floor, providing sweeping vistas of the city and staying open until late.
Checking-Out
The check-out process in the morning was swift and straightforward, with ample staff available to assist. However, it's worth noting that the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney imposes a 1.5% surcharge for credit card payments, which can be frustrating, considering most guests prefer using credit cards. This resulted in an additional charge of $6.56 when settling the bill.
Following my check-out, I strolled a couple of blocks to the Avis outlet at the Marriott Hotel, where I rented a car to explore the Blue Mountains.
In all honesty, staying at the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney was a splurge beyond my usual budget. Still, I couldn't resist the opportunity to experience the view it offers, especially during the Vivid Festival. I highly recommend visiting Sydney during this enchanting time, and for an extra dose of awe, consider booking a stay at the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney.
